The Global Nuclear Future

Since 9/11 the United States has made the claim that the Iranian Regime was moving towards a nuclear bomb. Although, Iran has claimed their nuclear program is designed for peaceful purposes, the three nations (China, Iran and Russia) who bought this claim are slowing realizing what Iran’s true intentions are.

Through the Security Council of the United Nations, the United States has been unsuccessful in passing meaningful sanctions due to the lack of support from China and Russia. However, the tides seem to be changing. Today this was reported:

"Russia turned on Iran, accusing it of "fruitless and irresponsible rhetoric" and adding its voice to a diplomatic assault Monday which included unilateral sanctions from both the EU and Canada, as well as warnings from Iran's opposition party that Ahmadinejad's regime could suffer the same fate as the deposed Shah.

The Russian remark came after criticism from Tehran over Moscow's support for UN sanctions last month. In the past, Iran had depended on allies: Russia and China — and their veto power at the Security Council — to block tough penalties, but Russia sided with the US and its allies and endorsed the sanctions, levied in a bid to force Iran to halt its nuclear ambitions." Iran’s nuclear ambitions aren't well stated; it's time for the regime of Iran to be absolutely transparent in what their true intentions are. The United States and its allies should not stand to the side and allow Iran to continue in this path of destruction. Hopefully Russia’s dissent from favoring Iran will help the Iranian Regime to realize that they will soon become the second nation in Asia that will be isolated.

Iran has stated in the past that it doesn’t believe Russia should follow the path of the United States. Source 2 However, with closer ties between Washington and Moscow, Iran is looking at a foreign relations island.

In the past I was in support of allowing nation-states to develop nuclear technology as a deterrent; however, with more regimes moving towards radicalism, it is time for true nuclear proliferation. This means that the United States and Russia must continue to lower their arsenals. Leadership does not come through with words; rather it comes through in true actions. When you are the leader of the world, you need to set an example. You cannot expect results when you are not willing to make some sacrafice to get the results that you are looking for. The fear of M.A.D. (Mutual Assured Destruction) is no longer an issue for the United States and Russia. Democracy (and to a greater extent Capitalism) has brought the two former foes closer together. The Obama Administration must continue to to work with the Kremlin in reducing our arms.

I pose a question to our readers, do you believe we should reduce our arsenal?
