The Two Theories of Funding in Washington DC

img credit: dc-cdn.virtacore.comJay Carney, Obama’s press secretary, told reporters Tuesday. “Having said that, we are always mindful of the fact that, as powerful and wealthy as this country is, we do not have infinite and unlimited resources, and we have to make decisions about how to spend our precious dollars and, more importantly, how and when to use military force.”This is a quote from a news article about the Obama administration's approach to the war in Afghanistan. It’s a sensible approach, but it has an ironic twist when compared to how the left actually views the resources of the federal government. When it comes to entitlement programs, the left sees the federal government as a limitless resource of revenue to fund all sorts of benefits and handouts. We can borrow trillions of dollars forever with no limit.

In reality, Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security are all facing serious problems and the only politician brave enough to put forth any real solution to dealing with any of it are getting beat over the head by a President who promised he was going to address our debt and deficit issues, but has not.

When it comes to the military, their attitude begins to change. Now our resources are limited. Our dollars are precious. While we have the infinite line of credit that the government can use to dole out benefit after benefit as long as you promise to continuously vote Democrats into office, we don’t possess the same line of credit to keep our troops well funded and see them through to victory. When you start talking about trimming the budget, the first item a liberal will put up is defense appropriation. You won’t hear liberals talk of Medicare the way they talk about our military, even though the funding for both comes from the same stream of tax revenue (and borrowing).Neither the military, nor entitlements can be magical programs of unlimited funds.

The press secretary for the Obama Administration admitted as much in his conversation with reporters. When will we start acting like it?
