"The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself." This is perhaps President Franklin Roosevelt's most famous quote, and it is a powerful message. It is a message we have forgotten. America has been playing into the hands of fear, blinded by it, and we have made some of our most important decisions based solely on fear itself.
When President Roosevelt spoke these words, Nazi Germany was growing in power with aspirations to dominate the world. In just a few years, America would be called to action, yet Roosevelt knew that allowing fear to dominate our choices would only make matters worse. Fear was (and is) the weapon of the enemy.

Abraham Lincoln called the Civil War a test as to whether our nation, a nation of the people, by the people and for the people, could endure. Today we face a similar test. And today we must recognize that 'the people' of America are Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus, Buddhists, believers of all types and non-believers alike. Today, 'the people' of America are White, Black, Hispanic, Asian, multi-cultural, gay and straight. The face of America reflects the faces of all people around the world. Today, as in the past, they come to America because it is a beacon of light and defender of freedom. It is the land of hope and opportunity.
Today we have an opportunity to show the world that we are that country. We live up to our ideals. We practice what we preach.
